Beginning January 1, 2026, the United Methodist Church transitioned to the Compass Retirement Plan, a defined contribution plan that replaced the Clergy Retirement Security Program (CRSP).
Under the Compass Plan, clergy receive three types of retirement contributions:
- 4% matching contribution
- 3% non-matching contribution
- A flat contribution of $150 per month
To fund these benefits, local churches are billed 10% of their pastor’s plan compensation for pension costs. This 10% rate is a blended funding rate used across the conference.
Because one part of the benefit is a flat $150 monthly contribution, the amount deposited into an individual pastor’s account will not usually equal exactly 10% of their compensation. Some churches effectively fund slightly more than their pastor’s individual benefit and others slightly less.
Across the entire conference, however, the total amount billed to churches collectively covers the full cost of all clergy Compass Plan contributions. For this reason, the contribution shown on a pastor’s Wespath statement will not exactly match the 10% amount billed to their church.
