Lay Servants, Speakers, Ministers — What’s the Difference?

Posted on

The ministry of the laity is vital to a thriving church, and Lay Servant Ministries exists to equip and empower laity who feel called to serve more deeply.

If you’ve ever wondered what it means to be a certified lay servant, speaker, or minister—or whether one of these paths might be right for you—join us for the Day of Discovery.

NC Conference Building, Garner (map it)
Saturday, May 31
10am–2pm, main event
2pm–3pm, optional CLM info session
$15, includes lunch

We’ll hear stories from around the conference and learn about five different paths available to laity exploring a call to ministry.

  • Certified Lay Servant – Geraldine Morrison, Trinity UMC, Sanford
  • Certified Lay Speaker – Don Schwenneker, Holly Springs UMC, Holly Springs
  • Certified Lay Minister – John Hall, Conference Lay Leader, Aldersgate UMC, Durham
  • Deaconess / Home Missioner – Brenda Brown, Union Grove UMC, Spring Lake
  • Licensed Local Pastor – Heidi Seifert, Christ the King UMC, Clayton

In addition, Leah Wiebe-Smith will share ways laity can make an impact by volunteering on conference committees such as Creation Care, Evangelism & Discipleship, or Safer Sanctuaries. And Deborah Horton, facilitator for the CLM Candidate Training Program, will lead a workshop on spiritual gifts to support participants in their discernment.

You can’t take the next step without knowing your options. Come, listen, discern—and discover where God may be calling you.
