In 2019, Hurricane Dorian caused severe flooding on the island of Ocracoke that measured much higher than previous storms, like Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Ocracoke UMC suffered damage in several areas of its building and in the church parsonage. On November 21, 2021, Ocracoke UMC held their first worship service in the sanctuary, 26 months after the hurricane.
Rev. Logan Jackson, said “it took volunteers, donors, and church members countless hours to get us to the point we are at now. To date, we have received over $1 million in donations to get our sanctuary renovated. This service was special for the church congregation and community alike, as we had members from all over join us both in-person and online.”
Ocracoke UMC hopes to “continue finishing renovations over the next few months and begin ministry opportunities once more.” Thank you to all of the volunteers who have donated their time and gifts to help Ocracoke UMC.
