Trinity United Methodist Church of Southport and the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church are sponsoring a Human Trafficking Workshop to create community awareness of this terrible issue.
Human Trafficking Workshop
North Carolina is ranked ninth in the nation for human trafficking cases. Southeast North Carolina is particularly vulnerable due to the convergence of Interstate 40 with the I-95 corridor. Trafficking predators are plentiful with such easy access to the human trafficking marketplace. At-risk teenagers, youth, and young adults are easy targets for predators seeking to coerce victims into illegal trade or forced labor. Come and learn more about these issues, including:
- Vulnerable persons coerced or forced into labor camps and uncompensated work
- Young men and women forcibly taken to other parts of the world
- How the predators form a network to trade and sell human beings for various purposes
- Teenagers and young adults coerced or forced into prostitution and the sex trade
- What problems does law enforcement encounter in identifying predator situations
- What laws and legislation currently exists to combat human trafficking
- How to recognize human trafficking issues in our own community
- What can be done at the grassroots level
Speakers and panelists representing the International Justice Mission, NC Coalition Against Sexual Assaults, NC Coalition Against Human Trafficking, Prevention Now, District Superior Court, Brunswick County District Attorney, Brunswick County Sherriff Dept., NC Methodist Conference, First Fruit Ministries, and others will come together with factual information regarding successes and problems associated with human trafficking issues.
The Workshop will be held at Trinity UMC, at 209 E. Nash Street in Southport. Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 9 AM to 3 PM in Murrow Hall. Literature and information will be available for pick-up, and a box lunch will be served.
