Mothers in Israel: Impudent Women of Early English Methodism

This webinar with Donna Fowler-Marchant took place on July 15, 2020. Watch the recording below, or check out our Past Events page to catch up on any other webinars you may have missed.

About the Webinar:

Many of their stories have been distorted and even forgotten, but women have been leaders and even preachers in Methodism from the beginning, and some were given the name, “Mothers in Israel,” to indicate that they were held in especially high regard. Come meet Susanna Wesley, Sarah Crosby, Sarah Ryan, Mary Bosanquet Fletcher, Frances Mortimer Pawson, and others as we explore the roles and ministries of women during Wesley’s lifetime (1703-1791) and briefly examine later developments through 1815 and the death of Mary Bosanquet Fletcher.

About Donna Fowler-Marchant:

Donna is an elder in the NC Conference and a graduate of Meredith College (B.A.), Duke Divinity School (M.Div. and Th.M.), and Wesley Theological Seminary where she obtained a D.Min. in Spirituality and Story. She is passionate about books, especially murder mysteries, travel abroad, almost all kinds of music, and early Methodist history, with a special interest in the roles of women in early English Methodism. Occasionally, she has even been described as a Metho-nerd and Wesley fan-girl! Donna has served UM churches of various sizes as well as a PCUSA congregation, but in September 2020, she will become the pastor of three British Methodist churches just outside London. Her first book, “Mothers in Israel:” Methodist Beginnings Through the Eyes of Women will be published by GBHEM at the end of 2020.
