All participants are expected to read the participant book, For the Common Good: Discovering and Using Your Spiritual Gifts by Christine Harman, before taking this course.

About the Course: This course reminds us that the Holy Spirit gives each Christian one or more spiritual gifts to be used for the common good. It guides readers to discover their own particular gifts and learn to use their gifts to serve others.

Participants will:

  • Discover the nature of spiritual gifts through Bible study and reflection;
  • Relate spiritual gifts to the overall life of the church and to the means of grace;
  • Discover one’s own spiritual gifts and examine their definitions;
  • Develop a plan to implement the use of spiritual gifts as an element of leader development and deployment in the local church including suggestions for how to build a ministry team or assign people to committees based on the gifts of each individual.

For questions about the course, please contact Elizabeth Harrison, eharrison@nccumc.org, Sound district director of Lay Servant Ministries.

To receive credit for a Zoom course, full attention and presence are required. Whether online or in person, staying engaged with the group and fully focused ensures the best learning experience. Zoom classes are interactive—expect breakout rooms, activities, and group discussions throughout the day.

We regret that we are unable to issue refunds or credits of registration fees.

About the Facilitator:

The Rev. Dr. Anne Walker Sims is a Virginia native who grew up near the beach and feels most at home near large bodies of water. She graduated from William and Mary with a double major in Environmental Science and Spanish but soon came to realize that God had a different calling for her: to love people rather than save dolphins. At Duke Divinity School, she learned to cheer on the Blue Devils, met and married Rev. Ben Sims, an Alabama native and also a Duke student pastor. She’s been a pastor for nearly 25 years.

Since making North Carolina home, she and Ben have shared their home with rescue dogs and cats while serving churches in cities, small towns, and rural communities, loving each for their unique gifts–all this while completing her Doctor of Ministry degree at Drew in 2010. In 2019 she and Ben moved to Oriental, and hope to never leave. In addition to serving Oriental UMC and facilitating community partnerships to serve the whole community, she leads workshops and retreats on a variety of topics, mostly around ancient and contemporary contemplative practices to soothe the soul and help us connect to God. The Oriental Community Labyrinth and Camp Don Lee are tied for her two favorite places on the planet.
