Preparing Your Church for the 2024 Hurricane Season & Extreme Heat

Summertime is here! As we transition into the summer months, here are some resources to help you prepare for summer weather: 

🌀Hurricanes

The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June through November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service forecasters recently shared a briefing and article on the outlook for the 2024 season.

☀️ Heat

May 26 – June 1, 2024, was NC Heat Awareness Week. The NC Office of Recovery and Resiliency launched a Heat Action Plan ToolKit to help communities prepare for extreme heat. The NC Department of Health and Human Services offers a Heat Health Alert System with updates on forecasted extreme heat.

🧰 Preparation Tips

  • Review or create a disaster plan. Download a church disaster plan template
  • Compile a list of contact information of the congregation and staff.
  • Make sure to have copies of essential documents. 
  • Take an inventory of the building to document items and their conditions. 
  • Check to see what your insurance covers and how to file storm damage claims.
  • Prepare your property. Make sure loose items are secure and weatherize the building.
