20th century mystic, theologian, scholar, and social activist Howard Thurman dealt profoundly with issues of diversity and inclusion, spirituality and social transformation, interfaith engagement, and political democracy across his life. His 1971 classic, The Search for Common Ground, is a masterwork on building community, and still has much to teach us today. Join us for 2 days on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta or online for a deep exploration of how Thurman’s life and work continue to speak to issues in contemporary society.
Candler School of Theology at Emory University and The Howard Thurman Papers Project have brought together an exceptional collection of scholars, theologians, and activists to present this collaborative conference. Eminent Thurman scholar Walter Earl Fluker, conference organizer, will be joined by Barbara Brown Taylor, Peter Eisenstadt, Gregory C. Ellison II, Luther E. Smith, and a host of others as we reflect on ways Thurman’s understanding of community can help us address the challenges of diversity and inclusion we face today.
