As the Russian Invasion of Ukraine enters its third month it has brought calls for prayer and statements of deep concern from United Methodists globally; it has also brought first-hand accounts of the impact of the war and ways United Methodists respond to the trauma of people in harm’s way. The Revs. Julia and Oleg Starodubets serve the Kyiv United Methodist Church, in Kyiv, Ukraine. Rev. Oleg Starodubets, a district superintendent who messaged UM News from Kyiv on Feb. 24. “People took their beloved and tried to leave the cities.” Rev. Starodubets said United Methodists in Ukraine are opening churches as shelters. He asked for prayers for peace and a Russian withdrawal from Ukraine. Rev. Julia Staradubets, MD is also a medical doctor and the first woman be ordained in the Ukraine Conference. She seeks to meet the medical needs of the growing number of internally displaced people as of result of the war. Rev. Bill Lovelace The Rev. William “Bill” Lovelace is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as a Ministry to Migrants Consultant. He is a former district superintendent and pastor in Lithuania, Ukraine and Southern Russia.
