Is a mystic a person seeking to escape the world, concerned only with the ecstasy of their own experience of union with the Divine, or is it a person who seeks to expand the radius of personal concern and responsibility by entering the world of social transformation from the position of oneness with all life within the heart of the Divine? Or are there other ways to describe Christian mysticism?
This course challenges you to redefine mysticism again and again. It will draw on the works of Howard Thurman, a theologian and spiritual guide, as well as returning to figures of the Old Testament such as Enoch, Ezra, Baruch, and Daniel. The course then takes you on a journey that visits early Greek Christian mystics and monastic mysticism by contemplating the connection between mysticism and social action.
In addition to online interaction, an optional live meeting session will be scheduled at the end of the course.
