NC Conference Disaster Ministries and Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) developed a partnership following Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Several teams from IRUSA volunteered in eastern North Carolina to assist with recovery and relief efforts. In October 2019, Disaster Ministries met with IRUSA in Alexandria, VA, to discuss how we could work with IRUSA’s disaster relief programs and develop a training program for their organization.

NC Conference Disaster Ministries hosted a two-day Early Response Team (ERT) Training in June 2021 for Islamic Relief USA. Ten IRUSA team members from across the country attended the training taught by Ann Huffman, NC Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, and Butch Huffman.
The first day of training covered topics such as site assessment, tarping roofs, and removing debris. On the second day, the students were assigned different pieces of the training and created an activity to engage the other students. Ann Huffman said, “when people from different faiths and cultures work together, everyone benefits.”
