Sponsor the work of the Project AGAPE Vocational School and resettlement ministry!
Nara Melkonyan writes: “Yes, the Christmas boxes are still very special and cherished by the children and families who receive them — they bring joy and hope. But you’re absolutely right: as the needs evolve, especially with the influx of families displaced from Artsakh, our focus has shifted to long-term, sustainable impact.
The Vocational Training School has become a cornerstone of that effort. We’re now equipping young people and women with hands-on skills that can help them find employment or start small businesses. In that spirit, fundraising for specific, tangible needs would be incredibly impactful — and I love your idea of setting goals that churches and women’s groups could rally around.
Here are just a few examples of the needs we have at the moment.
a) Vocational School—Here is a detailed breakdown of the average cost of funding one student at the Vocational School (VS).
Funding a student involves several components: trainer salaries, training supplies, and supplies provided to graduates upon completing the course. Here’s a breakdown of the approximate costs:
- Trainer Salaries: Based on expertise, experience, and the Project AGAPE budget, the average salary for vocational trainers is approximately $392–$420 per month (including taxes). This amount may vary slightly depending on their specialization and experience.
- Training Supplies – costs vary across programs:
- Sewing Class: Fabrics and threads (which we still have), sewing tools, supplies, and machine maintenance.
- Information Technology (IT): Computer hardware, software licenses, and networking equipment.
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL): Textbooks, teaching aids, and digital resources.
- Skin, Nail, and Hair Care Classes: Beauty products, tools, and equipment. Estimated cost: Approximately $300 per student per course.
- Supplies for Graduates – to help graduates transition into the workforce, we aim to provide them with starter kits, such as:
- Sewing Graduates: A basic sewing machine and essential tools.
- IT Graduates: Possibly entry-level laptops or software packages.
- TEFL Graduates: Teaching materials and resources.
- Beauty Care Graduates: Starter kits with essential beauty tools, equipment, and products. Estimated cost: Approximately $400 per student.
Estimated Total Cost per Student through combining these components:
- Trainer Salary: Approximately $392–$420 per month.
- Training Supplies: Approximately $300 per student per course.
- Graduate Supplies: Approximately $400 per student.
This results in an estimated average cost of $1,093–$1,120 per student per course. Please note that these figures are approximations and may vary depending on specific program requirements, the Project AGAPE budget, and current market prices.
b) Another example of the needs is a Local Aid Package for displaced families (purchased inside Armenia): $50–$200 per package, depending on the items (e.g., bedding, hygiene items, school supplies, household goods, clothing).
Not only would this kind of support meet immediate needs, but it also strengthens the local economy. Buying locally avoids shipping delays and costs, and it empowers local businesses at a time when Armenia’s economy is under pressure.”
Consider having a fundraiser for one of these needs: it could be a month of salary for a trainer, it could be training or graduate supplies, it could be funds for the starter kits (with supplies purchased on the local Armenian economy). A unit could raise enough for part or all of a Local Aid Package. This could be a great project for a congregation!
