Rev. Dr. Erin Beasley, co-author of I’m Black. I’m Christian. I’m Methodist. is an ordained elder in the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of The United Methodist Church. She currently serves as the pastor of The Vine United Methodist Church, a new online church in the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference geared to offer spiritual guidance and pastoral care for United Methodists who have lost their church homes due to disaffiliations. Erin also serves as the chair of the Commission on Religion and Race for the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference. She has served various ministry settings in Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee for 11 years. Erin is a graduate of Millsaps College (2010) where she obtained a Bachelor of Accountancy degree, with a minor in Music. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology (2014) and received her Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in 2020. Racial segregation in the mainline church was her doctoral focus. Erin enjoys knitting and playing Animal Crossing in her spare time. She is the proud auntie of three nieces and one nephew.
Rev. Dr. Tori Butler was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She received a BA in History and International Relations from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. She received her call to ministry following a semester abroad in Argentina. She is a graduate of the Divinity School at Duke University where she received her Master of Divinity degree. She was recruited out of Duke to serve in the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church where she ministered in three cross-cultural appointments as well as being the Chaplain at Wiley College. She was ordained by Bishop Janice Riggle Huie in 2014. By God’s amazing grace and through tremendous perseverance on May 13, 2019, she received her Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory University with a concentration in Biblical Interpretation and Proclamation. Her Doctor of Ministry project is entitled, “The Power of Mourning: Creating Spaces of Vulnerability for Black Clergywomen to Lament and Holler.” Dr. Butler is a contributor to Do Not Be Afraid: Bishops & Young Clergy Share Signs of Resurrection & Words of Hope, I’m Black. I’m Christian. I’m Methodist, What’s Next?: Twenty-Two United Methodist Leaders Discuss the Future of the Church, Preaching During a Pandemic: The Rhetoric of the Black Preaching Tradition, and most recently The Methodist Book of Daily Prayer.
All are welcome to join this Zoom event. There is no cost to participate. Pre-reading of the book is not required, but it will enrich your experience of the author talk. Space is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
