Faith in the City: Education as a Public Good (NCC Congregations for Children)

October 3, 2023 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

Rob Schofield, editor of NC Newsline, is our featured speaker as we begin the sixth year of the Faith in the City monthly discussion series. This month’s topic is “The Urgent Need to Preserve and Improve Public Education.”

One of Knollwood’s signature initiatives, Faith in the City hosts from October through May a variety of speakers who provide current information and facilitate provocative discussions about how education systems can better serve all students. Faith in the City invites participants to deepen community conversations about complex issues and find ways to work together to address injustices.

This year’s series will focus on “Education as a Public Good, exploring the essential role that effective public education plays in building healthy communities and maintaining a strong democracy.

Schofield will highlight the historical strength of public education in North Carolina — as a public good — and how that strength is being eroded through decreased funding, teacher burnout, and community interference in curriculum and policy decisions. Discussion will include practical steps that can be taken to reverse those negative trends and once again build a supportive culture for public education that benefits all students.

Faith in the City meets in-person from noon to 1 PM, with a Zoom option available. For further information or the Zoom link, contact faithinthecitykbc@gmail.com.
