Dear Rev. Lon, thank you so much for sharing your sacred story. Your history and your extended family history reflect the many of the complexities and contradictions that come with being “American.” My own family comes from New England and the Midwest while my husband’s family traces its roots to Georgia and Texas. Many years ago, my father-in-law gave us a pistol that his Confederate ancestor took off of a dead Union soldier (the pistol has been refurbished, but, doesn’t shoot!). About 150 years ago, my husband and I would have been enemies. My hope is that, when we take the time to listen to one another’s stories with compassion, discernment, and honor, we can find graceful, just places to meet in the “both-and.” Blessings to you and yours today!
