God instructs humanity to be good stewards of God’s creation. In taking this responsibility seriously, Christians are finding new ways to love, protect and serve their neighbors, human and non-human alike.
As more and more Christians are realizing the divine call to care for creation, there is more and more desire for our churches to take action for a cleaner, greener world. But how to get started?
The Creation Care Committee is happy to provide this tool, the Green Church Initiative, for local churches to use in becoming better caretakers of God’s creation.
The Green Church Initiative begins with filling out the registration below, then downloading this document, NC Green Church Initiative, which is to be downloaded and taken to your church. The document outlines a variety of steps churches can take to improve their creation stewardship, covering subjects including water and energy consumption, waste production, education, food and agriculture, landscaping, and more.
As a church, evaluate your green performance from the past year and commit to actions for improvement. Each improvement is awarded points; once your church acquires 90 points, you become a certified Green Church and will be recognized by the Conference.
We understand that this can seem overwhelming, but we want to help! The creation care committee is committed to helping as many churches as possible become Green Church certified. Coaches are available to help your church get started, or answer any questions you might have.
If you have any questions or wish to speak with someone about the Green Church Initiative (or arrange a speaker for your church), please reach out to Rev. Jarrod Davis at jdavis@nccumc.org.
Please register your church using the form at the bottom of this page. Registering will enable the Creation Care Committee to keep track of participating churches.
This document will guide you through the process of becoming a Green Church:
