Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr.
September 8, 1927 – May 4, 2024
With hearts filled with gratitude for a life well-lived, Bishop Connie Mitchell Shelton and the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church share the news of the death of Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr. on May 4, 2024. Bishop Minnick was 96 years old.
Bishop Minnick was elected to the episcopacy at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 1980 from the Virginia Annual Conference. He was assigned to the Jackson Area (Mississippi Annual Conference) in 1980 and was assigned to the Raleigh Area (North Carolina Annual Conference) in 1984.
During the 1988-1992 quadrennium, he was President of the United Methodist Committee On Relief.
In 1993, he became the President of the Council of Bishops to serve a one-year term. Bishop Minnick served on the Council of Bishops from 1980-1996.
After his retirement in 1996, C.P. served for ten years as bishop-in-residence at Duke Divinity School, retiring from that ministry on April 1, 2006.
Please hold in prayer the family of Bishop Minnick during this season of celebration and grief. The two sons of Bishop Minnick are NC Conference clergy: Rev. Greg Minnick (CA: Retired) and Rev. Jay Minnick (CA: Pleasant Grove).
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 8, at noon at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA. Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 10, at 1 pm at Pleasant Grove UMC (4415 Pleasant Grove Church Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613), with a reception to follow. The memorial service will also be livestreamed.
