Early in the morning and before the sun fully rose, nearly 75 members of the North Carolina Annual Conference gathered for fellowship and exercise. The 2nd Annual “Glow in Greenville” 5K Run/Walk follows a long tradition of 5Ks as part of past annual conference gatherings. There was particular joy in reconnecting in person after many years of virtual gatherings.
Bishop Shelton opened the race event with a blessing and thanks for all clergy spouses. Gifts may still be made to the Methodist Home for Children in memory of and in honor of clergy spouses.
The route, which winds throughout the neighborhood behind the Convention Center, is flat and shady. Participants ranged from Boston Marathon competitors to casual walkers, youth, conference staff, clergy, and laity. Twenty youth and conference leaders spread across the route to encourage racers and point them in the right direction toward the finish line.
The NC Clergy Spouse Association hosted a post-event refreshments table open to participants and NC Conference members, intending to foster space for fellowship and community building. Bagels, bananas, and coffee – oh my!
Many thanks to all volunteers – especially Doug Lain and the Wrightsville UMC community – for assisting with logistics and planning. We look forward to seeing you at the AC 2024 5K!
