This year, the Youth in Unity event at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham was a powerful weekend for middle and high school students of color from the North Carolina Conference. Formerly known as Más Diversity, the name change to Youth in Unity reflects our renewed mission to teach young people about God while cultivating future leaders in their communities. As the Dean of Youth in Unity, I am excited to share the highlights of this year’s gathering and to invite even more youth to join us next year for an experience they won’t want to miss.
The weekend was filled with activities that encourage spiritual growth, fostered friendships, and provided opportunities for our young participants to explore their potential. While we originally planned to stay overnight, a change in scheduling meant we adjusted our plans. But through it all, God was glorified as we made it all work!
The weekend kicked off with worship and continued with engaging workshops, delicious food, and plenty of fellowship. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire design team, whose dedication and hard work made this event possible. Additionally, I am grateful for our facilitators, who brought invaluable insights and passion, helping to educate and develop the young minds of tomorrow.
A special thank you goes to the North Carolina Central Wesley Foundation for their support and contributions throughout the weekend. We had the privilege of touring the North Carolina Central University campus, giving our young people a glimpse into college life and encouraging them to dream about their future possibilities.
Sunday’s worship at Epworth UMC was a highlight of the weekend, featuring the Consuming Fire Liturgical Mime Team, whose performances were both moving and uplifting. We were honored to have North Carolina Central students preach, bringing messages that resonated deeply with our youth. We also had the pleasure of sharing Holy Communion served by Bishop Connie Shelton, which added a deeply meaningful conclusion to our weekend together.
Youth in Unity is more than just a weekend event—it’s an opportunity for youth to discover their gifts, connect with others, and deepen their relationship with God. Next year, we’re hoping to reach even more students, and we would love for you to be part of this journey. Whether you’re a middle or high school student, or a parent, guardian, or community member, we invite you to join us as we continue to build a community rooted in faith, unity, and leadership.
Next year Youth In Unity will be held directly before our summer Breakaway event. Mark your calendars for June 19 -22, 2025. We can’t wait to see you there!
