$ Hallowed Journey: Spiritual Direction Through Diminishment (NC Institute for Spiritual Direction and Formation)

In this workshop for spiritual directors and other spiritual caregivers, we will consider the spiritual challenges and gifts of accompanying people with life diminishments, including those that come with aging, loss of physical ability, cognitive decline, etc. We will consider the following:
– How do we provide spiritual nurture and companioning to folks who are experiencing what they understand to be physical, mental, or cognitive diminishment?
– Do we recognize our own assumptions, concerns, and fears about aging and other life changes? What work do we need to do with our assumptions, concerns, and fears in order to be present to directees?
– How might we as spiritual directors be present with people with cognitive or mental health challenges?
– What might it mean to accompany people in hallowing their diminishments – honoring diminishments as holy?
Facilitator: Mary Kay Glazer is a spiritual director, retreat leader, Life-Cycle Celebrant and writer. She is on the NCISDF Leadership Team and Faculty. Raised a Roman Catholic, she has been part of the Quaker community since 1989. She loves to be with people who want to respond faithfully to the Divine invitation into deeper relationship. Cate Alexander is a spiritual director and a facilitator of contemplative practice groups. Cate has her roots in the Roman Catholic tradition and has served in Protestant churches, as well. Recently, she completed three years of study with the Center for Action and Contemplation’s Living School and brings a contemplative lens to all of her work, including the journeys of aging and eldering. Her joy is companioning those on an evolving spiritual path toward a deeper relationship with the Divine of their understanding.
