Denman award winners are nominated by people who believe in their strong evangelism practices–the type of authenticity that draws people into a connection with church, but most importantly, into a relationship with God. In 2025, the Evangelism and Discipleship Committee reviewed around 40 applications for clergy, laity, and youth. The nominators and friends of the winners in these categories are here to share highlights about their nominees.

Clergy Award, Rev. Joseph Park, St. James UMC, Newport
Ordained elder Joseph Park was nominated because he fully believes that baptism is a call to ministry. His evangelistic outreach means that Joseph meets the unhoused where they are to listen and build relationships with them. He’s started a homeless ministry team and a Matthew 25 fund that the church uses to offer financial help. Joseph connected his church with other area churches and non-profits to leverage the impact of the work.
He also leads Bible studies at a women’s shelter, prays with imprisoned persons, teaches an online English as a Second Language class, and plays bingo at an assisted living home. Living as an ambassador for Christ means that Joseph impacts not only his congregation but the wider Newport, NC, community.

Laity Award, Mr. Jack Parker, Edenton UMC, Edenton
Mr. Jack Parker designed cards he uses to begin conversations with those God places in his path. His conversations don’t begin heavy-handedly; instead, they start with the notion that “somebody cares.”
Jack was at Dollar General when he noticed something troubling the cashier. He offered her an encouraging word and his card. As they spoke, Jack assured her she was loved by a merciful God and invited her to church.
She came the following Sunday, and Jack welcomed her. That was 2 years ago, and she has never left. Teresa has joined the church and testifies that, “God sent Mr. Jack into my life that day. My husband was dying, and my life was caving in. Through Mr. Jack, the Lord reminded me that I am loved.”

Youth Award, Seanna Alebiosu, Millbrook UMC, Raleigh
Seanna is a youth at Millbrook UMC who embodies evangelism. One day before youth group, she told her mom she wished more kids came to youth group. Her mom encouraged her to invite her friends, reminding her, “It’s your youth group and that it’s not just the pastor’s job to welcome new people…it’s something all of us are called to do.”
Since then, Seanna hasn’t come to youth without bringing a friend…or five. Her family’s row in church has expanded to include several teens, and now people often ask, “Will Seanna and her posse be there?” There’s nothing more priceless than seeing the group of teenage girls pile in and out of their minivan on the way to youth group!
Seanna has shared her faith and invited others to experience it too. Though she can be quiet, she’s stepped out with courage and care, making church a more welcoming place for others. I’m so glad the Annual Conference is recognizing her efforts to grow our youth group and share Jesus’ love.
