Ministry Spotlight: Creation Care Committee

Welcome to our series that spotlights ministries of the NC Conference. Read about other conference ministries as these stories are published weekly.

Creation Care Committee

The NC Conference Creation Care Committee is dedicated to changing the way that United Methodists in North Carolina understand and approach our God-given responsibility to care for this creation that has been entrusted into our hands. Through sound biblical teaching, we help guide the Conference, all our Districts, and local churches in becoming better creation stewards through education, facility and practice changes, and advocacy on all levels.

Under the umbrella of the Conference’s Peacebuilding team, the Creation Care Committee meets monthly through Zoom. Our meetings typically consist of eight official members, representatives from many district creation care teams, and several people who have been engaged in this work with the committee for many years. We stay very active throughout the year, providing grants for local church creation care teams, hosting webinars for the Season of Creation, sharing devotional material, engaging in advocacy, hosting book discussion groups, and encouraging churches to become a part of the Green Church Initiative.

Loving Boldly, Serving Joyfully, Leading Courageously

The Creation Care Team is seeking to live into The United Methodist Church’s vision to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in tangible and faithful ways.

We love boldly by equipping and encouraging local congregations in their creation care ministries. Each year, we award grants to local churches to help them form a creation care team or launch a new project that answers the call to care for creation in their community. Churches that have established teams are encouraged to pursue certification through the Green Church Initiative, deepening their long-term commitment to sustainable practices. Our particular focus for 2026 is inviting churches to consider how they might reduce food waste as an expression of loving both neighbor and creation.

We serve joyfully through education, worship, and connection. The team hosts a training webinar or in-person gathering each summer, followed by four webinars during September as part of the Season of Creation. This year, our focus is on helping churches prepare to celebrate a newly added feast day on the church calendar in September, the Feast of God the Creator. Through these opportunities, we offer joyful, worship-centered ways for congregations to engage creation care as a spiritual practice.

We lead courageously through advocacy and advocacy training. By helping United Methodists understand how faith connects with public witness, we encourage churches and individuals to speak and act faithfully on behalf of God’s creation, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide our witness in local communities and beyond.

As a ministry of the NC Conference, the Creation Care Committee is funded by the generosity of your apportionment giving. Learn more about how apportionments fund our shared ministries.
