UM Letters on Venezuela

Posted on

The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church and The World Fellowship of Methodist & Uniting Church Men (WesleyMen) have published statements of support for the Pastoral Letter in the Face of the Military Action of the United States of America Against Venezuela written by The Evangelical Methodist Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL).

The CIEMAL letter reads in part, “As a community of faith, we deplore every act of oppression, violence and every attack on peace in our world. Moreover, we cannot remain in the silence that hurts and undermines human dignity, respect for life and the justice to which we have been called and called as believers in Christ Jesus.”

The COB stands in full solidarity with CIEMAL and wholeheartedly affirms their pastoral letter. The COB statement reads in part, “We join our Methodist siblings across Latin America and the Caribbean in condemning all acts of violence, military aggression, and violations of national sovereignty. As followers of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we reject every ideology and action that diminishes the sacred worth of human life or deepens cycles of fear, instability, and injustice.” Read the full COB statement.

Rev. Edgar De Jesus, World President of WesleyMen, shared that the WesleyMen governing board of directors collectively supports the CIEMAL letter. The board further states that during their meeting, “We condemned all forms of violence, including military aggression. And we are standing in solidarity with The Evangelical Methodist Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL – Consejo de Iglesias Evangélicas Metodistas de América Latina y El Caribe), committing ourselves to prayer, advocacy, and action for peace grounded in justice.” Read on the WesleyMen website.
