October is Clergy Appreciation Month! We are grateful not only this month, but every day, for the faithful leadership, compassion, and dedication our clergy bring to their congregations and communities.
In celebration of this month, Bishop Shelton and Dr. Rae Jean Proeschold-Bell, Director of the Duke Clergy Health Initiative, share ways in which we can extend our appreciation and support for our clergy.
Here are a few ideas from the Connectional Ministries staff to express your appreciation and gratitude for your pastor:
- Cook dinner for the pastor & their family, or take them out to dinner
- Babysit the pastor’s kids, so they can go out with their spouse
- Write a personal note and include specific ways your pastor has enriched your life
- Encourage a congregation to send happy mail to the pastor
- Purchase a book that your pastor may like

We’ve also compiled a list of clergy care resources to support their well-being.
While October provides a special opportunity to show our gratitude, we continue to celebrate and support our clergy all year long through prayer, encouragement, and acts of care.
Thank you, clergy, for all the ways you Love Boldly, Serve Joyfully, and Lead Courageously! We are deeply grateful for you!
