King was born the fourth of seven children. He never lived in the same place for a long time or with the same people. Sometimes his grandmother had him; then his mother, then his father. Then back again. Sometimes he was with siblings, sometimes not.
Finally, he found himself with strangers. In foster care.
On the day he was adopted – and friends cheered as a judge read his new name – he sobbed.
“I’m free,” he said.
