Derek Leek to Transition from Role as Director of Communications

Posted on

Derek Leek will conclude his service as Director of Communications for the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church at the end of April, following 17 years of faithful leadership.

During his tenure, Leek shaped how the Conference communicates its mission, tells its story, and connects across ministries, districts, and local churches. He guided the evolution of Conference communications—strengthening foundational systems, expanding digital presence, and building storytelling capacity.

His leadership enabled more effective sharing of the impact of local churches, Conference initiatives, and connectional ministry. Through his work, leaders and congregations stayed informed, inspired, and engaged.

Leek aligned communications with the Conference’s broader vision, supported major initiatives, and equipped teams to communicate with clarity, consistency, and creativity. His collaborative approach and strategic insight made him a trusted partner to staff, district leaders, and Conference leadership.

Beyond his professional contributions, Leek shaped the culture of the team with creativity, humility, spiritual leadership, and deep care for others. His presence left a lasting mark on both the work and the people of this Conference.

Leek will transition to a new professional opportunity on May 1. While the Conference will deeply miss his leadership and presence, we celebrate this next step in his journey and give thanks for the many ways he strengthened our shared ministry over the past 17 years.

During this transition, the Communications team will continue to support the Conference’s communications work to ensure continuity. For communications inquiries or requests, please contact communications@nccumc.org.

“We are deeply grateful for Derek’s faithful leadership and the lasting impact of his work,” said Rev. Ismael Ruiz-Millán, Executive Director of Connectional Ministries. “He strengthened how we communicate who we are and what we are called to do, and in doing so, he strengthened our connection across the Conference. We celebrate him and give thanks to God for his ministry among us.”

Please join us in giving thanks for Derek’s ministry and in praying for him as he begins this new chapter.
