On January 30, 2026, the North Carolina Supreme Court allowed the Petition for Discretionary Review by the North Carolina Conference and other defendants seeking review of the decision of the North Carolina Court of Appeals in the lawsuit involving the former Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church. The Court of Appeals had previously reversed a lower court decision dismissing the lawsuit brought by former members of Fifth Avenue UMC. The North Carolina Supreme Court will now consider whether the Court of Appeals erred and the original decision to dismiss the lawsuit was correct.
