IDI® Request

Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®)

The North Carolina Conference has chosen to use the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) to help our pastors and church members better understand and build intercultural competence. The IDI is not a religious instrument, but it is a premier assessment of intercultural competence. It is a proven tool used for decades by numerous businesses, educational institutions, governments, and non-profits.

When you take the assessment and are debriefed with a Qualified Administrator, you will receive your results and an Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) you can use to reflect on and improve your cultural competence. After your debrief, we will give you the option of connecting with an accountability partner to further discuss your IDI results and work on your IDP.

We hope the IDI is just one of many tools you can use to better understand yourself as a leader. Developing leaders in our United Methodist Church will help all of us shape a UMC that represents the diversity and beauty of God’s kingdom.

Individuals

Register as an individual if you do not need a team debrief. You will receive a link to complete the Intercultural Development Inventory and schedule a one-on-one session with a Qualified Administrator to review and reflect on your results.

Steps to Take the IDI (click to view steps)
  1. Submit Individual Request
Fill out the IDI request form below to request access to the IDI and schedule a one-on-one debrief.
  2. Payment
A full conference grant is available for church teams and individuals completing the IDI for the first time, with partial grants available for subsequent requests. Contributions help us extend this opportunity to more churches and individuals across the conference.
  3. Watch for Access Email
Within five business days, you’ll receive a unique email invitation from IDI LLC (donotreply@idiinventory.com) with the subject line “Welcome to IDI.” This email contains a link to create your personal user account.
  4. Create IDI User Account and Complete the Assessment
Follow the instructions in the email to create your user account and begin the IDI. Plan for 20–30 minutes in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Be sure to click “submit” after completing the assessment—your responses will not be processed until you do.
  5. Watch for Email from IDI Qualified Administrator
Within 7–10 business days of completing the assessment, you’ll receive a follow-up email from an IDI Qualified Administrator (QA) to schedule your individual debrief. It is important that you respond to this email promptly and schedule your debrief in order to receive your IDI results.
  6. Individual Debrief
Your debrief (about one hour) will help you interpret your results and identify next steps for growth. You will receive a copy of your individual results and development plan during this debrief.
  7. Next Steps
After your debrief, your QA will send you a survey. We appreciate your feedback to help us improve the process. The survey will include an opportunity to request to connect with a partner or small group for ongoing accountability and support as you pursue your development plan.

Teams

Register as a team if you are part of a group such as S/PPRC, Church Council, or a church staff. In addition to individual debriefs, your team will take part in a group debrief to reflect and grow together. Individual results will remain confidential.

Steps to Take the IDI (click to view steps)
  1. Assign a Team Leader and Submit Team Request
The team leader will complete the IDI request form on behalf of the group. They will need to provide each team member’s name, email address, and phone number. The team leader will also be responsible for following up with team members who do not complete the inventory on time.
  2. Payment
A full conference grant is available for church teams and individuals completing the IDI for the first time, with partial grants available for subsequent requests. Contributions help us extend this opportunity to more churches and individuals across the conference.
  3. Watch for Access Email
Within five business days, each team member will receive a unique email invitation from IDI LLC (donotreply@idiinventory.com) with the subject line “Welcome to IDI.” Please ask team members to check their inbox and spam/junk folders regularly during this time.
  4. Create IDI User Account and Complete the Assessment
Using the link in the email, each team member must create their personal IDI account and complete the assessment in a quiet, distraction-free setting. All team members must complete the IDI within 15 days of receiving the email to avoid delays in scheduling the team debrief.
  5. Team Debrief
Within 7–10 business days of all assessments being submitted, the team leader will receive an email from the IDI Qualified Administrator (QA) to schedule the team debrief (1-2 hours). The team debrief will focus on the group’s aggregate results. Individual results will remain confidential and will not be shared during this session.
  6. Individual Debrief
After the team debrief, each team member will be contacted by a QA to schedule their individual debrief (30-45 minutes). Team members will receive their individual results and their Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) during this debrief.
  7. Next Steps
We encourage each team to identify follow-up actions or strategies to strengthen team dynamics, communication, and collaboration. Some teams may choose to engage their individual development plans within their group. Individuals may also request to connect with a partner or small group outside of their church team when completing the survey provided by their QA.
