{"id":11247,"date":"2013-03-01T15:44:51","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T20:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nccumc.org\/treasurer\/?p=11247"},"modified":"2022-11-04T11:28:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T15:28:58","slug":"faith-and-money-travel-logs-they-want-to-know-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nccumc.org\/treasurer\/2013\/03\/faith-and-money-travel-logs-they-want-to-know-what\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith and Money: Travel Logs &#8211; they want to know what?!?!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are blessed in the NC Conference in countless ways &#8211; one of our blessings is our ability to enable ministry to happen by helping to fund travel costs for our clergy and laity serving churches in our conference.\u00a0 It is a gift that we are as able as we are to provide support for ministry in this way.\u00a0 Those who have to travel as part of their ministries (through visitations, travel to meetings, etc.), are more free to go as needed and called when so much concern for the simple logistics of that visitation (like where will I find the money for gas?) is not in the forefront of their minds.\u00a0 How fortunate we are to be able to assist in ministry in this way!<\/p>\n<p>As ones who are given this luxury of reimbursed travel costs, our call to be accountable to those who have entrusted us with this funding is high.\u00a0 We are governed by certain restrictions on required documentation from the Internal Revenue Service in order for reimbursements not to be counted as taxable income &#8211; but we are also called to a higher standard than that!\u00a0 We are called to be accountable to God&#8217;s church for our use of this gift!<\/p>\n<p>We recommend all travel be paid through a vouchered system\u00a0 &#8211; which means documentation is kept and reimbursement is made with evidence of the business purpose of the travel.\u00a0 The days of providing a set amount of money per month with no reporting back of the use of that money should be long gone.\u00a0 Our church members and donors deserve better!\u00a0\u00a0We have developed some <a title=\"Travel Documentation Guidelines\" href=\"https:\/\/nccumc.org\/treasurer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/TravelDocumentationGuidelines-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general guidelines<\/a> to assist in how to be more accountable and more transparent in travel record-keeping and there is <a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc.org\/treasurer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/accountreimbqa-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information on Accountable Reimbursement Plans<\/a> on our Training Materials page.\u00a0 The transparency of travel can seem to be a sensitive matter in churches so it is critical to address it up front and know that it is the responsibility of the church finance committee to make sure travel is documented properly or else to report it as taxable income for the clergy or lay employee of the church.\u00a0 Properly documenting travel costs under an accountable plan can save money on taxes for employees!\u00a0 It is true that keeping a travel log takes more time than just simply receiving a set amount of money per month but the transparency, accountability and confidence that can be found in this effort far out weigh the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Christine<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are blessed in the NC Conference in countless ways &#8211; one of our blessings is our ability to enable ministry to happen by helping to fund travel costs for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_EventAllDay":false,"_EventTimezone":"","_EventStartDate":"","_EventEndDate":"","_EventStartDateUTC":"","_EventEndDateUTC":"","_EventShowMap":false,"_EventShowMapLink":false,"_EventURL":"","_EventCost":"","_EventCostDescription":"","_EventCurrencySymbol":"","_EventCurrencyCode":"","_EventCurrencyPosition":"","_EventDateTimeSeparator":"","_EventTimeRangeSeparator":"","_EventOrganizerID":[],"_EventVenueID":[],"_OrganizerEmail":"","_OrganizerPhone":"","_OrganizerWebsite":"","_VenueAddress":"","_VenueCity":"","_VenueCountry":"","_VenueProvince":"","_VenueState":"","_VenueZip":"","_VenuePhone":"","_VenueURL":"","_VenueStateProvince":"","_VenueLat":"","_VenueLng":"","_VenueShowMap":false,"_VenueShowMapLink":false,"_tribe_blocks_recurrence_rules":"","_tribe_blocks_recurrence_description":"","_tribe_blocks_recurrence_exclusions":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[346,371],"class_list":["post-11247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-announcements","tag-faith-and-money","tag-treasurers-office"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Faith and Money: Travel Logs - they want to know what?!?!
