Stephanie Ford grew up in various parts of the country and enjoyed the benefit of an ecumenical childhood (including sojourns in United Methodist, Baptist, and interdenominational congregations). After travels to China in 1984, Stephanie spent the next 12 years teaching English as a Second Language at the community college level. She then went on to pursue a seminary degree at a Baptist seminary, followed by a PhD in Christian spirituality from a Catholic university.
For 10 years, Stephanie taught spirituality at a Quaker seminary, the Earlham School of Religion in Indiana, before returning to her home state of North Carolina. In 2011 she joined the staff of Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, where she now serves as minister of Christian formation, a position that includes Christian education, intergenerational offerings, retreats, small-group leadership, and preaching. Stephanie also teaches with the Friends of Christ School (a local ecumenical group), as well as with The Academy for Spiritual Formation, a program of The Upper Room.
She will teach us using her book, Kindred Souls: Connecting Through Spiritual Friendship. We will discover what spiritual friendship is and how it differs from other kinds of friendship. We will meet spiritual companions from biblical and Christian history and learn how to develop and nurture spiritual friendships. We will also explore the most profound friendship of all – friendship with God.
