The great Christ-hymn of Philippians 2 uses the root of the Greek word “kenosis” to describe how Christ “emptied himself” to take the form of a slave, before also “humbling himself” to become obedient to the point of death on a cross. Faithfully following Jesus requires a similar downward journey of emptying and humility: in the words of John the Baptizer, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” In this Day Apart we will draw upon the resources of Scripture, consult the writings of Christian mystics like Thomas a Kempis, Meister Eckhart, and Dag Hammarskjold, and mine our own experiences to explore how we might truly have in us “the same mind . . . that was in Christ Jesus.”
Rev. Jeremy Troxler is a baptized disciple of Jesus Christ, Margaret’s husband, Ada and Della’s daddy, an ordained elder in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, pastor of Spruce Pine UMC in the mountains of North Carolina, a child of his family’s tobacco farm, a former Morehead Scholar at UNC-Chapel Hill, a graduate of Duke Divinity School, a delegate to the United Methodist General Conference, a lover of books, the owner of a rambunctious beagle mutt named Jasper, and a fan of baseball and the Braves. Jeremy previously served in ministry as the Director of the Thriving Rural Communities Initiative at Duke Divinity School, as pastor of Maggie Valley UMC in Maggie Valley, NC, and as the President’s Assistant serving on the island of Jersey within the Methodist Church of Great Britain. He has been blessed to preach in settings as various as Duke Chapel, The NC Preaching Festival, an auto-body shop, and a small clay church in the mountains of Mexico, and recently contributed a chapter to the book “Mentoring For Ministry: The Grace of Growing Pastors.”
