When my daughter saw a spider on its web, glistening in the morning dew, wonder gleamed from her two-year-old face. It was the first of many discoveries of God’s amazing world.
We looked up pictures of spiders and webs, and we both were enthralled. One species of spiders would have been an amazing gift to nature lovers, but there are over 40,000!
Birds and their many colors and sizes were our next nature encounter. A bird feeder was a delight. One kind of bird would have been a wondrous gift; there are 10,000 species documented. As more discoveries were made, I found there are millions of species of living organisms on this earth.
Nursery school songs like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” began our astronomy exploration. Scientists now believe there are over 300 sextillion stars. And maybe even more different snowflakes! Our creating God is so generous with gifts of creation for us to marvel and enjoy.
And then there is humankind. Each person that is born is unique. We are not robots that look and think alike. Each person has unique fingerprints and facial recognition features. We have different life experiences and we certainly do not have the same opinions. A few types of us would have been miracle enough.
This extravagant gift of ongoing creation is the tip of the iceberg of God’s generosity when we meditate upon the unconditional love shown to each of us. The Word of God spoke this world into being, and the Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us, showing us the generous love of God through living, dying, and resurrection. Now, we are invited to share the generous Spirit of love with all creation. How blessed we are to magnify the Lord!
