Response under way for flooded areas of conference
Storm-related flooding and other damage occurred in several areas of the North Carolina Conference from Thursday through Monday, and the rivers have continued to rise, threatening even more homes and businesses. The Windsor UMC and homes in the Elizabeth City District sustained flooding, and Carolina Beach experienced water damage, affecting a number of homes. Reports of damage continue to come to the Conference and the need for disaster response is increasing. MERCI has already sent flood buckets to Windsor and more will be distributed if needed. Gifts for disaster response are needed; please announce the special offering for Conference Disaster Response, as soon as possible, and submit funds to Conference Advance #SOO176. MERCI to dedicate chapel
MERCI will dedicate a chapel to the glory of God and in honor of C. A. Dillon of Raleigh, on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. MERCI is located at 676 Community Dr. in Goldsboro.
Seasonal Flu shots available at United Methodist Building
Flu shots will be given from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the United Methodist Building in Garner. Persons wishing to receive the shot must present a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NC card and a photo ID. There is no charge for participants and family members enrolled in Conference BCBSNC. Children ages 4 – 17 must be accompanied by a parent. Persons enrolled in another BCBSNC plan may receive a shot at this clinic but will be subject to the benefits provided under their plan. Persons not enrolled in BCBSNC will be required to make a payment of $30 for each flu shot. To reserve a space, contact Caroline Thornton email@example.com no later than Oct. 8.
Mission Seed grant applications due Nov. 1
Mission Seed Funds are designed to facilitate and encourage United Methodist congregations of the NC Conference in risk-taking ministry and radical hospitality. ZOE – Hope for Christmas Animal Project
This Christmas, give the gift of a new beginning. In Africa, a cow, pig, even a goat can be the first step toward transforming the life of an orphan who is left to care for younger brothers and sisters because the AIDS pandemic claimed the lives of their parents.
The ZOE Orphan Empowerment Project equips these children with essential life skills such as farming, animal husbandry and small business training while sharing the good news of Christ’s love. Read more

The Academy for Leadership Excellence will host Sue Nilson Kibbey in Greenville on Nov. 9 and in Raleigh on Nov. 10 for the workshop “Ultimately Responsible.” Kibbey is the executive pastor at Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City, OH. Read more
DISCIPLE Bible in partnership with General Commission on UMM
The General Commission on UM Men has forged a partnership with DISCIPLE Bible Outreach Ministries of North Carolina in order to bring DISCIPLE Bible study to prisons across the U.S. During its September meeting, the 21-member board approved an agreement with the Rev. Mark Hicks, executive director of North Carolina’s DISCIPLE Bible Outreach Ministries. Read more
Registration continues for the Lay Academy of Christian Witness
The Commission on Evangelism continues to receive registrations for the Lay Academy of Christian Witness, Oct. 21-23 at Camp Rockfish. The cost is $25 per person. Due to the desire to include several churches in this training, a maximum of 3 persons per church may attend. (This event is for first- time adult Lay participants. Space is limited.) 5K Pumpkin Run and 1 Mile Walk to support DBOM
On Saturday, Oct. 23, the 4th Annual Great Pumpkin Run to support the ministry of DISCIPLE Bible Outreach, will be held on the lawn of Jamestown UMC in Jamestown, NC. Registration begins at 8 a.m and the 5k run begins at 8:30. One-mile walkers begin at 8:45 a.m. Read more
10-Fold – 10 Days – 10 Projects – $10k
10-Fold is about 10 days of giving to 10 different global mission projects by multiplying and mobilizing passionate people to stand up and be counted. The event will launch Oct.10 and last for 10 days with the goal to raise $10,000 for each project. Every day will focus on a different project supported through The Advance, the designated giving arm of The United Methodist Church. Read more

Those with e-mail addresses with other than @nccumc.org address can have messages to their conference address forwarded to any address they designate.
