Mark:5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>______________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps for Biblical \u201cAnimation\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(The method used by Ched Myers of Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries, www.bcm-net.org)<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Read the Biblical Text<\/h3>\n<h1><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Make a handout of the scripture verses you are studying<\/span><\/b><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px\">. \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px;font-weight: normal\">Have people read it, with gusto, as if they were telling a real-life story\u2014not the flat way we often read scripture.<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Read the text again<\/span><\/b><b> from different translations.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 16px;font-weight: bold\">Analyze the Text (use flip charts, ways to record)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Identify episodes<\/span><\/b><b>, as if scenes in a play.\u00a0 <\/b>Where does each scene start, end?<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Name the characters.<\/span><\/b><b>\u00a0 <\/b>How do they relate to one another?\u00a0 Who has power and who does not?\u00a0 Who is in safe space, who is unsafe; who has a voice, who doesn\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Describe settings (time, place, space)<\/span><\/b><b>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Where does this scene occur?<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Discuss plot: events and happenings.<\/span><\/b><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Events are about what the characters do. \u00a0Happenings are about what happens to the characters.<i>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Identify major points of conflict.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 The great majority of stories in the gospels\u00a0are conflict stories.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Look at the ways conflict is resolved or deepened.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>With Jesus, the conflict is\u00a0almost always deepened.\u00a0 Conflict leads Jesus to the point of crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Define the formal structure to the episode<\/span><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Think English class.\u00a0 If the scenes\u00a0move from scene A to scene B to scene A again, it\u2019s a \u201csandwich\u201d or \u201ccircular\u201d structure.\u00a0 View the scenes as chunks and see how they stack up.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Check out how this scriptural passage links to other ones<\/span><\/b><b>.<\/b>\u00a0 MIDRASH is the Hebrew practice of linking one story to another.\u00a0\u00a0 This is how people originally hearing scripture understood it\u2014that one story stood on an older one.\u00a0 We know this from our families\u2014we mention something someone did and understand it based on the whole family history.\u00a0 Jesus spoke based on the assumption that his hearers knew the older stories.\u00a0 We need to recapture those linkages, or else reading a gospel story is like \u201cwatching the last 5 minutes of a movie.\u201d\u00a0 So, for instance, if the New Testament story is about bread, think of all the other bread allusions in the bible.\u00a0 Write them down so you can look up those stories in scripture.\u00a0\u00a0 This creates a web of messages on a topic, and enriches the meaning of the particular text being discussed.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Read and discuss the older stories and identify their relevance to your text.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 How do the themes in the text being discussed fit with the earlier or other texts?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 16px;font-weight: bold\">Reflect on the Text<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px;font-weight: normal\">\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">List your questions and perplexities.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size: 14px;font-weight: normal\">\u00a0\u00a0 After all this analysis, what questions come to mind?\u00a0 What seems confusing, odd?\u00a0\u00a0 Our current church culture leads to looking at the bible for answers, for \u201cright-answeredness.\u201d\u00a0 This is especially true with more conservative cultures.\u00a0 We need to allow the perplexities to exist, to get beyond the tapes of \u201creceived\u201d interpretation, and to become more comfortable with the questions scripture brings, the wrestling with what we do not know.<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Make associations with our world (real situations, not vague ideas<\/span><\/b><b>).<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 When we see the biblical story, think of what would be a similar setting today.\u00a0 That is:\u00a0 use analogical thinking, which is the key to cross-cultural understanding.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Say where you identify with the characters and situations in this story.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Re-tell the biblical in our own social context.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is the whole point of making\u00a0the biblical story relevant.\u00a0\u00a0 What is our own new story that re-narrates the same\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dynamics as the biblical story?\u00a0 Who has power now and who does not?\u00a0 Who is hungry now and who is not?\u00a0 Etc.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Experiment with embodying\/acting the story out<\/span><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Take roles.\u00a0 Act it out in\u00a0physical space.\u00a0\u00a0 Do it quickly and jump right in; people take parts (it\u2019s interesting to check out who relates how to the parts they took).\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that the biblical author had the power to select which words and stories were most important to include.\u00a0 Think about what the writer left in or out and why these choices were important.\u00a0 (If someone asks you:\u00a0 \u201cWhat did you do yesterday?\u201d you pick and choose what to relate.\u00a0 Acting out the stories can tell you a lot about this priority setting.)<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">If there is time, discuss theological\/spiritual meanings of the text.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 This is what\u00a0we generally jump to, forgetting most of the earlier steps.<\/p>\n<p>************************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p><b>IF YOU ONLY HAVE AN HOUR OR SO, DO THE BASICS:\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 Read the passage together.<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 Identify characters, setting and plot.\u00a0 What are the scenes, in time and space?<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 What\u2019s the conflict or energy point and how is it resolved?<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 What other scriptural stories connect to this scripture?<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 How does this story relate to our culture?\u00a0 Where do we see the same social dynamics?<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 (Remember\u2014biblical writers showed Jesus\u2019 life so we could learn how to see and act as He did.\u00a0 Jesus healed all, championed social outcasts, and said the last shall be first.\u00a0\u00a0 If we\u2019re not paying attention to our own social and economic dynamics as we read the bible, we may be \u201cspiritualizing\u201d the book\u2014making it too \u201cheavenly.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><b>Considerations:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When teaching in a group setting, though all of the steps of Animation are important, I\u2019d like to further highlight these pieces of the process:<\/p>\n<p>1-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>Not allowing folks to place the scripture safely away in heaven.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0I think because of\u00a0the tapes running in our heads, this is the first movement that most folks\u00a0want to take.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let them go there.\u00a0 Keep them firmly planted on earth.\u00a0 For example, if the characters in the narrative have not yet named Jesus as God\u2019s son, don\u2019t allow the hearers of the story to do it either.\u00a0 If they do, they will miss much of the contextual tension of the story, thus, ironically missing the spiritual implications because they have moved too quickly to the spiritual realm.\u00a0 Of course, the reality is that it is all \u201cspiritual realm.\u201d\u00a0 So, keep folks real.\u00a0 The theological implications will emerge soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>2-\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>Recontextualize the story into our culture.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0With the animation of the Tale of the Two Daughters in Mark 5.\u00a0 After Jesus has the interaction with the \u201cbleeding-daughter,\u201d we look back at Leviticus 15 and discover that she is the one who was the total disruption of the entire religious project.\u00a0 We then ask folks to reflect on the question \u2026 \u201cwho is the one who most disrupts your religious project?\u00a0 Who would you wish had never existed at all? This is the one who crawls toward Jesus.\u201d \u00a0We don\u2019t specifically answer the question for the hearers, we allow the narrative to, as Ched says, \u201cdo the heavy lifting.\u201d\u00a0 Folks get to reach their own conclusions of who the woman is in their cultural context.\u00a0 Very powerful stuff that unlocks the \u201cspiritual\u201d implications.<\/p>\n<p>3-\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>In your preparation to lead the sessions, give PLENTY of time to the process.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a do-able process even without years of \u201cformal\u201d training, but I cannot overstress the need to spend ample time in scripture, use solid commentaries (Interpreters Bible, Interpretation Series {Abington}, Ched\u2019s stuff, etc.), utilize a good Bible dictionary and concordance, use a Greek &amp; Hebrew dictionary, and do the reflective work getting back to the \u201cearlier testament.\u201d\u00a0 Computerized versions of any of these can be very helpful, especially the Greek\/Hebrew dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>4-\u00a0\u00a0 <b><i>Finally, resist providing \u201canswers.\u201d<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 Use lots of leading questions and allow the narrative to lead folks in their answers (or in most cases, many more questions.)\u00a0 Your role is to help folks \u201csee\u201d the narrative being unveiled in their own context and gently guide them to new and liberating space.\u00a0 Radical love is always dangerous for it will always claim justice for the most vulnerable and it will do so though nonviolent action.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t, then in my mind it isn\u2019t truly love.\u00a0 Such Christ-centeredness will always be a frightening place to venture, particularly in this American\/success-driven\/consumerist\/militaristic society, where might makes right.\u00a0 Just remember, Jesus critiques EVERY culture and calls every culture to the Banquet Feast that is His life.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t choose for anyone to be left behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Messaging a New Way of Leadership through Biblical Animation in an Appreciative Model Download: \u00a0Overview\u00a0Messaging a New Way of Leadership\u00a0 Download: \u00a0Steps for Biblical Animation Download: \u00a0Messaging a New Way [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":30,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_tec_requires_first_save":true,"_EventAllDay":false,"_EventTimezone":"","_EventStartDate":"","_EventEndDate":"","_EventStartDateUTC":"","_EventEndDateUTC":"","_EventShowMap":false,"_EventShowMapLink":false,"_EventURL":"","_EventCost":"","_EventCostDescription":"","_EventCurrencySymbol":"","_EventCurrencyCode":"","_EventCurrencyPosition":"","_EventDateTimeSeparator":"","_EventTimeRangeSeparator":"","_EventOrganizerID":[],"_EventVenueID":[],"_OrganizerEmail":"","_OrganizerPhone":"","_OrganizerWebsite":"","_VenueAddress":"","_VenueCity":"","_VenueCountry":"","_VenueProvince":"","_VenueState":"","_VenueZip":"","_VenuePhone":"","_VenueURL":"","_VenueStateProvince":"","_VenueLat":"","_VenueLng":"","_VenueShowMap":false,"_VenueShowMapLink":false,"_tribe_blocks_recurrence_rules":"","_tribe_blocks_recurrence_description":"","_tribe_blocks_recurrence_exclusions":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-4985","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
