In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated southeastern North Carolina. Massive flooding caused catastrophic damage. Twenty-eight lives lost. Structures damaged totaled 99,000.
Bishop Hope Morgan Ward sent this message of hope: “We all watch in shock and disbelief as we see the destruction and chaos caused by record rainfall in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. The same water that graces our geography has inundated us. However, trusting in God who is generous and strong, we are not overcome. Together we are resourceful and creative, trusting the Holy Spirit to speak to us and to use us in restoring families and communities. Hearts eager to help are turning toward us, and we give thanks.” (October 12, 2016)
Phone calls poured into the NC Conference Disaster Response Call Center from people offering help. Almost $4 million has been donated to the NC Conference Disaster Response to alleviate suffering and to restore homes and communities devastated by Hurricane Matthew.
North Carolina Conference is deeply grateful to the organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals for the outpouring of resources to assist their neighbors in this time of great need.
