Giving Together Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation – Yes, Again!

April 26, 2018 Leave a Comment

The Giving Together Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., awarded the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church (NC Conference) six more grants of $10,000 each to support Hurricane Matthew recovery work in Cumberland County.

These latest six grants are designated for the following:

• Debris removal
• Electrical repair & installation
• Plumbing installation
• HVAC installation
• Roofing repair/tree removal
• Licensed contractors

Since October 8, 2016, when Hurricane Matthew brought massive flooding to the area, the Cumberland Community Foundation has awarded the NC Conference five grant packages, totaling $217,652.80, supporting the gamut of disaster recovery efforts in the community. Previous grant packages were awarded in January, April, May, and September of 2017.

That generosity has made a huge difference, and thanks abound. Don Evans, NC Conference disaster response site manager in Fayetteville, writes, “With the gracious funding from Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., Hurricane Matthew disaster recovery in Fayetteville has been enhanced tremendously. The grants have helped hire an additional construction manager, purchase a vehicle, and provide funding for electrical work, plumbing work and a myriad of other things associated with restoring devastated homes. This is an example of Christian Love in Action. Thanks from all of us for your support to us and your love for your community.”

Rev. Sam Loy, NC Conference disaster response coordinator, is deeply appreciative of the partnership with Cumberland Community Foundation, and of the many levels that the partnership enhances recovery work. “For the past ten years I have witnessed many responses by people to the needs of their neighbors who have been devastated by disaster,” writes Loy. “The Cumberland Community Foundation is a shining example of what is possible when civic efforts partner with the relief and recovery efforts of faith communities.”

“Speaking on behalf of the churches in the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and our denominational partners, I want to thank the Cumberland Community Foundation for the encouragement that their continued support provides to our staff and volunteers. Not only does it help us build capacity, but also increases our joy and determination to restore the lives of our disaster-affected neighbors in Cumberland County.”

Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., awards grants to nonprofit organizations that help the community thrive. Since 1980, it has awarded $47 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.

After Hurricane Matthew hit, Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., created the Giving Together Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. to raise support for disaster relief and recovery in Cumberland County.
