Red Oak UMC pastor, Rev. David Joyner
While most of the congregation worshiped online through Zoom on Sunday, September 6, 2020, Rev. David Joyner preached about patterning our lives after the example of Jesus through times of conflict and stress. And while it is tempting to dismiss or shun those who disagree or oppose us, Jesus would have us love and include them.
The members of Red Oak UMC have found multiple ways to reach deep into their community, building relationships and serving all their neighbors in rural Nash County. They supply fresh produce through their community garden, serve lunches and provide Farm to Table food boxes on a weekly basis. They have opened their facility to school children who need a safe place to access the internet while their parents go to work. And, they have supported the local public school teachers and staff, among other outreach efforts. In the past few years, they have grown from a congregation of 13 to well over 70 worshiping members. Red Oak is located in the Heritage District and shows faithfulness in its stewardship by paying 100% of their apportionments, as well as gives to a number of Advance Specials.
The executive committee of the NCCUMC Mission Team reviewed several inspiring applications from congregations who serve their rural communities, meeting needs and welcoming everyone. It was a difficult decision, but they are proud to present the 2020 Key Taylor Award to Red Oak UMC!
