We continue our celebration of Black History month by featuring Marcharkelti McKenzie (Advance # 3022000), a Global Mission Fellow serving at Open Doors United Methodist Mission in Prichard, Alabama. Marcharkelti was commissioned in July 2014, by none other than our own Bishop Hope Morgan Ward. Marcharkelti (affectionately known as “Mo”) comes from Maxton, NC. Prior to becoming a Global Mission Fellow, she was a AmeriCorps VISTA worker with Partners in Ministry (S-00193) in East Laurinburg, NC.
As Marcharkelti nears the end of her two years of service in Alabama, she reflects on what she has learned: “Patience. Two years ago, I prayed to God about the gift that I recognized, which is working with youth ages 12 to 19. As a Global Mission Fellow, I have not worked with youth at all. At St. John UMC, I work with 2 to 13 year olds. At Dumas Wesley, I work in the office building database to track the kids in the After School Program. Then, at Sybil Smith, I help the mothers with computer issues, drive the van to pick up kids for daycare, and host workshops. In all this, I had to have patience with myself, with the people that I work with and for. Most of all patience with my call. At the end of it all, God has shown me other gifts and deepened our relationship.”
Asked about her plans as she nears the end of her service as a Global Mission Fellow, Marcharkelti says she plans to pursue ordination as a Deacon through the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the UMC. She dreams of returning to NC one day, as a Deacon, to work in camp ministry and to start her own youth center.
