Emily, 6, told her mother she wanted to make sure her friends, many of whom are homeless or live in shelters, had blankets to snuggle under on chilly nights.
To date, she has collected about 100 blankets as well as monetary donations to buy socks, mittens, hats and scarves.
“It feels like it’s getting super cold, and I just wanted to see if maybe some people wanted to have some blankets,” Emily said.
When Emily decided to ask for blanket donations, she was certain her family and friends at First Methodist who left the breakfast each week in warm cars to go to their warm homes would be willing. She was right.
“Did you think so many people would help?” Emily’s mother, Jenny White, asked her.
“Yes,” Emily said.
Emily then talked to her teacher, Ann Dill, about putting a donation box in her first-grade classroom at Rocky Mount Academy. Dill instead extended the offer to the entire school.
“We are so thankful for Mrs. Dill’s help at the school,” White said. “She was wonderful.”
White also made a donation box for Emily’s crusade at the Telegram, where she works as an editor.
White said her daughter is a ray of sunshine to the people who attend the breakfast.
“She genuinely worries about some friends she has there,” White said.
Emily said she enjoys cracking the eggs on Monday mornings for Spencer Batchelor, who cooks for the gathering. She goes from table to table to talk with her friends, and they enjoy her company.
“Miss Mary always asks about how school’s doing,” Emily said. “It’s super fun, and I make a lot of friends there. I like how they’re kind and they know me. They get along with me.”
The blankets will be distributed during the Thanksgiving luncheon from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and at the weekly breakfast the following Monday. Extra blankets will be donated to Greater Joy Church, which operates as a shelter when the temperature dips below freezing.
The community breakfast is held at 6:30 am. each Monday at First Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St. For more information, call 977-0400.
