What could be more exciting than serving other people and glorifying God at the same time! If you have wondered what to do next in your life, perhaps the Global Mission Fellow program is for you. But, hurry. March 31, 2015 is the deadline for young adults, 20-30 years to apply as a 2015 Global Mission Fellow though the United Methodist Church.
After working at two local ministries after college, including Partners in Ministry in East Laurenburg, NC, Marcharkelti (“Mo”) McKenzie applied to be a Global Mission Fellow in 2014. She was accepted, trained in the Philippines, and was assigned to Open Doors, a Mobile District UMC community project in Pritchard Alabama, that focuses on high poverty, limited employment, high school dropout rates and other inner city challenges. Following her two years of service at Open Doors, Mo plans to study to become a UMC Deacon. She says she knows without a doubt that she is called to serve in mission and loves working in the church, also.
Describing her current experience, Marcharkelti says, “One of the benefits of being a part of the Global Mission Fellows program is intentional community. Intentional community is more than just having roommates who pay part of the bills. We are accountability partners. We eat together; we pray together; do book studies together and other things. Having people around that love God like you do makes life a little easier. As a Global Mission Fellow missionary, I have gained more confidence in my gifts and talents than I have ever had before. Having people around that love God like you do makes life a little easier.”
Global Mission Fellows serve for two years, both globally and domestically. Fellows receive five weeks of training, a living stipend for food, toiletries and personal items, housing, utilities, local transportation, health and travel insurance, on-going program support, relocation costs, and an end of service award.
