A tornado touched down Monday afternoon in Beaufort and Hyde Counties east of Washington NC and stayed on the ground for 5 to 8 minutes. At least 13 people were taken to the hospital and 3 remained hospitalized on Tuesday. The tornado downed trees, caused at least 4 car accidents, destroyed several homes and damaged roofs.
On Monday night, your Disaster Response Team were in action. Tommy Gilbert, who serves as our Hurricane Irene Recovery Project Coordinator, took a mission work team to the disaster area and tarped four roofs that were damaged by the F2 tornado. The work team is from Michigan and was here in the North Carolina Conference working in our Hurricane Irene recovery ministry.
Rev. Cliff Harvell, Disaster Recovery Superintendent, and Mr. Gilbert surveyed the damaged area and report that in the Belhaven community, twelve homes were damaged, including 4 that were completely destroyed. Several families will need help rebuilding. One family’s home and landscaping business were a total loss. Your Conference Disaster Recovery Ministries is proceeding with the casework needed to meet these needs.
