GBGM missionary Rosanna Panizo-Valladares (Advance #3019710) works with and advocates for NC’s Hispanic/Latino community, as well as seeks to educate the church at large. She currently is appointed as pastor to Sanctuary Lakewood-District Mission in Durham and Corridor District Hispanic Ministries, housed at Haw River UMC.
A Peruvian native, Rosanna was raised in and ordained a pastor in the Methodist Church in Peru. Rosanna pastored for 10 years in Peru and was dean of the Methodist Seminary in Lima before coming to NC in 1997 for advanced studies at Duke Divinity School. She remained in NC and held several pastoral appointments before being commissioned as a GBGM missionary in 2009, as part of the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministries.
In an interview published as “Being the Incarnation of the Gospel,” in the March/April 2014 issue of New World Outlook, Rosanna describes her work with Hispanic women who are victims of domestic violence. Through community outreach efforts, Rosanna is helping to create safe spaces for these women to be heard and, in some cases, obtain the documentation and visas they need to remain in this country. In addition to domestic violence and immigration, Rosanna advocates for the rights of migrant farm workers, the end to racial profiling, and the empowerment of those who are oppressed. She is vice chair of the NC Conference Committee on Refugee and Immigration.
Rosanna has much to share with the broader NC Methodist community. She believes God is telling us something through the presence of Latinos in the US and NC. Massive immigration is occurring all over the world, as a result of the global economy. Economic refugees are risking their lives for a better life for the next generation.
“Latinos are reshaping our experience of faith,” Rosanna says. “They are people of faith with a message of hope and possibilities. We need to hear God’s message from their life experience. They can teach us how to live as the embodiment of Christ here and now.”
Rosanna is a resource available to the whole NC Conference, in its efforts to promote and nurture Hispanic ministries. She will be the worship leader at the upcoming Many Facets, One Community training sponsored by Corridor District Hispanic Ministries at Camp Chestnut Ridge on March 30, 2014. Rosanna may be reached by phone at 919-824-9202 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
