Join with thousands of Methodists around the world in a weekend of service, May 17-18, 2014. Change the World 2014 marks the 5th year of this United Methodist Communications sponsored event, inspired by Mike Slaughter’s book, Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus.
Mike’s challenge is simple and direct. Quit worrying about getting people into your church and start finding new opportunities to move people who are already there out into God’s service. (Jim Wallis)
In 2013, White Plains UMC’s day of service, which it called Church on the Street, included combining three worship services into one, cancelling Sunday school, and going out to multiple venues around Cary to serve the community instead. Members wore bright red t-shirts in celebration of Pentecost and the transformational power of the Spirit in the world.
The response can be as unique as your local church, involving children, families, and people of all ages in service within their communities, sharing the love of Christ through concrete acts of service. Each local church is encouraged to combine their hands together in its community and Change the World. Your church decides how.
Resources and suggestions of possible service activities are available on the Change the World 2014 website. Churches are encouraged to register their event on the website. Those that register may request a free Change the World marketing kit, complete with a lawn banner, to help them publicize the event. Individuals also may check the website to seek out a registered event where they can get involved. Better yet, organize an effort in your own church. Change the World.
