Storm-related flooding and other damage occurred in several areas of the North Carolina Conference from Thursday through Monday, and the rivers have continued to rise, threatening even more homes and businesses.
Please consider reaching out to your storm affected brothers and sisters here in North Carolina by giving to NC Storms Emergency Response – Advance #S000176. 100% of your gift will go to storm response.
Also, please consider a gift for the MERCI Mission Center as they seek to respond to this NC disaster. Advance #S-00136. 100% of your gift will go to MERCI.
Send remittances, using the Conference remittance form, to Conference Treasurer, P.O. Box 60053, Charlotte, NC 28260.
The Windsor UMC and homes in the Elizabeth City District town sustained flooding, and Carolina Beach experienced water damage, affecting a number of homes. Reports of damage continue to come to the Conference and the need for disaster response is increasing. MERCI already has sent flood buckets to Windsor and more can be distributed if needed.
Gifts for disaster response are needed; please announce the special offering for Conference Disaster Response, as soon as possible, and submit funds to NC Conference Advance #SOO176. This advance is used to collect and disburse funds for responding to storm-related emergencies to include any costs related to mitigating the disaster. It can also be used for direct support to affected families and costs in delivering assistance.
Also, please remember MERCI Mission Center as they respond – Advance #S-00136.
Send remittances, using the Conference remittance form, to Conference Treasurer, P.O. Box 60053, Charlotte, NC 28260.
Finally, as you receive assessments from Disaster Response Coordinators in your districts, if you have need of Conference funds for relief, there is a small fund established for this purpose. Collections of gifts help to replenish this fund, so take the offering, please! To submit a request for funds, please contact Steve Taylor, Outreach Team Coordinator, at staylor@nccumc.org or Kathy Reavis, Outreach Office Administrative Support, at kreavis@nccumc.org. If you have questions, please call the Outreach Office at: 919-779-6115 ext 256 or toll free 800-849-4433.
If possible, the Disaster Response Coordinator assesses the need and discusses this with the District Superintendent, and the one request on behalf of the whole District, should be submitted to Steve. It is ideal for the communities hardest hit to form interfaith response teams and procedures!
Flooding is a strange experience. Rivers rise at different rates and waters recede quickly in some places and painfully slowly in others. While we may celebrate the passing of the threat in one community the water has yet to create havoc in a place relatively nearby. We continue to pray for all of our brothers and sisters in NC, that they may know the comfort, strength and love of God through our efforts to reach out in compassion and with volunteer support as needed!
