Pounding for the Food Challenge at Holly Springs UMC (Fairway District)
The Panthers didn’t prevail on the Super Bowl field, but their Carolina United Methodist fans can claim victory in another arena. No one lost in this competition between the Rocky Mountain Conference and the two North Carolina conferences to feed the hungry.
Eighty-five churches/groups in the North Carolina Conference contributed 55,695* food items and 132,000 pounds of potatoes from two gleaning events. The Western North Carolina Conference collected 584,410 items along with 45,000 pounds of potatoes given by the Society of St. Andrew to the cause. The folks in Denver and the Rocky Mountain Conference collected 360,664 items.
Over 1 million food items will be distributed by local churches and organizations to families dealing with hunger and food insecurity. Thank you to all the churches and groups who stepped up and accepted the challenge.
* This is an updated total as of Feb. 11. The numbers reported in the Western NC Conference news release were as of Feb. 8.
