What is Pilgrimage to Asia?
The Pilgrimage to Asia is a journey of Christian spirituality, justice and peace— designed for the clergy and laity of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
What is the context of the Pilgrimage to Asia?
The Pilgrimage to Asia will first take place in Incheon, South Korea, where Henry Appenzeller, the first Methodist missionary to Korea, arrived on Easter Sunday in 1885. The participants will visit the places where missions started, schools and hospitals built, and peoples have gathered into the churches as well as the places missions continue. As a way to witness to the growth of Korean churches, one of the biggest Methodist churches in the world will be included in the itinerary. You will also experience cultures and dynamics of new and old in Korea. And you will visit one of the unification observatories, so called DMZ, between the borders of South and North.
We are continuing our 2020 Pilgrimage to Manila, Philippines, the venue of the 2024 General Conference. The United Methodist Church in the Philippines is subdivided into three episcopal areas where the capital city of Manila is part of the Manila Episcopal Area. In the midst of many challenges, the United Methodist Church in the Philippines is growing and vibrant. We will engage in discovering the Filipino people’s ongoing struggle for justice and peace within the Christian context. The participants will visit places where Philippines missions started such as Central UMC, Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation, Union Theological Seminary, among others. Through immersion, we will join local faith communities to hear and exchange stories of justice and peace and share meals together.
