The Hunger Games opened in theaters this past weekend to be the third highest-grossing opening weekend ever and the first highest for a non-sequel. Many of the youth and adults in your church will be seeing the movie especially since it was filmed here in North Carolina. Also, the book has been required reading in some high schools being a massive success itself. The movie, and the remaining movies in the trilogy that will follow, provide a fun and interesting opportunity to explore biblical themes in today’s culture.
Two United Methodist pastors in the Western North Carolina Conference, Andy Langford and Ann Duncan, have published a Kindle e-book titled, The Gospel According to “The Hunger Games” Trilogy. The short e-book serves as a discussion starter for church leaders who want to engage their congregation with a Christian viewpoint on such a popular series. It includes an overview of the series and explorations of Christian allegory, main characters, and themes of love and sacrifice. Discussion questions are also included.
