Kalau, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, serves in a cross-racial\/cross-cultural appointment as pastor of Haw River UMC and Massey&#8217;s Chapel UMC in the Corridor District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/index#\/recDetail?rid=7244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Silver Linings: A Memoir<\/a> by Leonard E. Fairley. Bishop Fairley recounts his upbringing through the eyes of a young boy who discovers that even the unpredictable nature of everyday life is a woven tapestry held together by God\u2019s providence. Bishop Fairley pastored several churches and served as District Superintendent and Bishop in the NC Conference. Bishop Fairley also authored a book of poetry, <a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/index#\/recDetail?rid=5769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Who Shall Hear My Voice?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/search\/recDetailPage?rid=6160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I&#8217;m Black. I&#8217;m Christian. I&#8217;m Methodist.<\/a><br>Ten Black women and men, including Rev. Justin Coleman, pastor of University UMC in Chapel Hill, explore life through the lens of compelling personal religious narratives. The contributors are leaders whose lives are tangible demonstrations of the power of a divine purpose and evidence of what grace really means in face of hardship, disappointment, and determination. Each of the journeys intersect because of three central elements that are the focus of this book. Rev. Coleman also shared part of his story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc.fm\/deep-reckonings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deep Reckonings<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/index#\/recDetail?rid=1230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blood Done Sign My Name: A True Story<\/a> by Timothy B. Tyson. On May 11, 1970, in Oxford, NC, Henry Marrow, a 23-year-old Black veteran, walked into a crossroads store owned by Robert Teel and came out running. Teel and two of his sons chased and beat Marrow, then killed him in public as he pleaded for his life. Tim Tyson&#8217;s narrative account of Marrow&#8217;s murder and the resulting social unrest in Oxford includes the story of his father, Rev. Vernon Tyson, the local United Methodist preacher at the time, who attempted to foster dialogue and healing. It includes scripture, readings, prayers, and activities for individuals, families, and groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/index#\/recDetail?rid=6613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psalms for Black Lives: Reflections for the Work of Liberation<\/a> by Gabby Cudjoe-Wilkes &amp; Andrew Wilkes. This book includes thirty devotions, each containing a psalm, a reflection, and an invitation for the reader to develop a justice imagination through further engagement with the text. It also includes daily discussion questions to support small-group study and a guide for congregational and community groups who want to embody the words of the Psalms together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nccumc-hl.mimas.opalsinfo.net\/bin\/index#\/recDetail?rid=6688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Night is Long but Light Comes in the Morning: Meditations for Racial Healing<\/a> by Catherine Meeks. From the winner of The President Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award, a spiritual guide to restoring yourself from racial trauma and committing to the long work of dismantling racism. Meeks shares highlights and insights from her journey and offers a much-needed meditative guide for the weary and frustrated. With personal stories and thoughtful direction, she takes the reader on the trajectory from self-awareness to recognition of the past, to a new and individual way forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 And yet, we can find inspiration in those Methodists who stood against the tide and those guiding the church today toward the horizon of racial justice. Black clergywomen are pioneers of the United Methodist Church who continue to significantly contribute to making disciples and spreading the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
