$ “My Grandmother’s Hands” Beyond-a-Book Study (NC Institute for Spiritual Direction and Formation)

September 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

In this beyond-a-book study experience, we will participate in a process based on the latest neuroscience and somatic healing methods.Interested in healing racism in America? The body is where our instincts reside and where we fight, flee, or freeze. Resmaa Menakem’s book My Grandmother’s Hands introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide. In this beyond-a-book study experience, we will participate in a step-by-step process based on the latest neuroscience and somatic healing methods. We will incorporate activities from The Racial Healing Handbook that help us cultivate the skills needed to move beyond our biases and toward collective healing.
In My Grandmother’s Hands , Resmaa Menakem brilliantly stops us in our tracks before we can get to Part 1 of his book. He challenges us to get real with ourselves. We’d like to invite you to consider Resmaa’s guidance as you discern whether or not to sign-up for our book study.
Please sign up, and get ready to be challenged if:
“…the persistence of white supremacy in 21st century America surprises you.”
“..you are not surprised that widespread white supremacy continues to injure America, but have no idea or little hope for overcoming it.”
“…you see white supremacy as a belief system of ideology.”Please sign-up but be open to changing your perspective if:
“…you are convinced that ending white supremacy begins with social and political action.”Please do not sign-up if:
“…you believe America’s racial tensions lie not in white supremacy but in its dark-skinned people and the power they wield.”This isn’t your typical book study. If you are looking to show up, reflect on what you read in an open forum (or in break-outs), and complete your reading for only half of the sessions, you may want to re-consider whether it’s worth your investment. Claire Cox-Woodlief of CCW Transformation Ministries and Bryana Clover create a brave community where everyone will be challenged, loved, and uplifted. Where we decenter Whiteness. Where we hold each other accountable. We promise it will be a life-changing experience for you!Three Months
