Elijah often worked to the point of burnout, crying out to God in despair. And God would send help – a widow, ravens, and even angels to revive and nourish him for the next big thing. 1 Kings 19 has my favorite image of Elijah’s revival when God basically says, “Go take a nap; here have a snack.”

When I started studying counseling, I wasn’t surprised to find I had as much to unlearn as I did to learn. Two concepts for ethical practice that I now attend to regularly are competence and capacity.

Anything we practice (counseling, faith, leadership, even sports!) requires us to stay within our competence and our capacity. We cannot practice above our competence or beyond our capacity. Doing so means we could cause harm to ourselves or others.

Recently, I find myself dancing just on the edge of capacity. How about you?

So many of us are overwhelmed! Once again, the many needs of our world, our country, our community, our church, and our family are reaching unforeseen levels. We Are At Capacity. Next stop: Stress, Anxiety, Burnout!

Often during times like this, we are asked questions like, “How is it with your soul?” “What’s your rule of life?” “What are you doing for self-care?”

When at capacity, such questions seem like a challenge and can lead to the assumption, “I must be doing something wrong!”

I offer the invitation to look at your self-care in a gentler way. Don’t add to your abundant to-do list, “Overhaul My Self-Care!” Simply pause. Ask, “What do I need right now?”

Pay attention to your breath. Try to take deep belly breaths for 120 seconds. Use a silent or spoken breath prayer. It only takes 2 minutes to reset an anxious brain!

Pay attention to the messages your body is sending. Are you thirsty? Hungry? What are you craving? We need the nourishment of good food and water. When stressed, we often simply forget to fuel ourselves. Get a cup of water or tea to sip. Plan for a special meal or get a small treat. Enjoy it.

Pay attention to any stress or pressure in your body. Get up, move, and stretch those tight muscles. Walk outside. Dance to your favorite song. Simply stand in the sun or feel the breeze.

And finally, pay attention to your energy level. Are you tired? (Do I even need to ask?) Take a nap. Review your sleep hygiene. Go to bed before everything is done for the day, trusting you will have enough energy tomorrow.

Most clergy spend years ignoring their own needs while staying highly attuned to everyone else’s. Asking yourself, “What do I need right now?” helps us recognize what we need before it becomes a crisis and we try to operate beyond our capacity.

In partnership,
Center for Leadership Excellence and the Commission on the Status and Role of Women

Breath, water, food, movement, and sleep are the building blocks for our physical, mental, and spiritual health.
